The anti-static record mat is made from felted carbon filaments: the clean, even contact of felt without the static build-up that felt is known for. Carbon doesn't generate charge through friction the way wool felt does, so you get less of the dust and crackle that static attracts.
It's also naturally self-damping. In analogue playback, small stray vibrations can have an outsized effect, and the carbon surface helps settle them, keeping the record steady and the background quiet.
